Want to Improve the Curb Appeal of Your Home?

If you want your home to look its best, you should consider the color and condition of your garage door. Has the weather taken a toll on its finish? Are there a few nicks and dents that can’t be repaired? Or do you simply want to enhance your curb appeal by upgrading your home exterior?

Many Styles of Garage Doors to Choose From

Regardless of why you want to improve the look of your current garage door or buy a new one, there are an array of colors and styles to choose from today.

Modern Style Garage Doors

“If you have a modern style house with a lot of windows, for example, you might consider an aluminum framed garage door with glass panels,” says Bernard Kerstiens, a sales representative with Overhead Door Company of the Colorado Mountains. “Another option is a door with the glass applied to the outside of the frame, so all you see is a solid wall of glass.”

Insulated Garage Doors

If extreme weather is a consideration, insulated steel garage doors are an excellent option, suggests Kerstiens. The doors are sturdy and durable and help keep the garage – and, hence, the rooms beside and above the garage – warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer.

Steel Garage Doors

“Any steel garage door can also be painted any color to complement the rest of your house,” says Kerstiens. It can even be changed to look like a classic wooden door. “It’s a steel door, but they put a stencil on top of it and paint so it looks like the grain of wood,” he adds.

Traditional Wooden Garage Doors

Actual wooden garage doors also are a viable option, especially if you are looking for a timeless and traditional look. “If the house has a lot of wood aspects on the outside, a wood door would complement that and give the home really great street appeal as well,” advises Kerstiens.

Choose the Right Garage Door Style to Match Your Home

No matter which style or color you choose, you should select a door that matches rather than clashes with the rest of your home. For instance, an aluminum and glass door might look out of place on a traditional Colonial home, while a carriage-style garage door that swings open on hinges probably wouldn’t be a good fit for a contemporary home.

Before you determine which garage door is right for your home, it’s always best to seek the advice of experts who have spent years helping homeowners decide which style and color will work best.

“An experienced sales representative can come out and take a look at your house and offer a lot of suggestions as to what would be most appealing,” Kerstiens says. “Several different types and colors of doors can complement a house.”
